Dambulla

Five caves, two thousand years of paint.

Region
Cultural Triangle
Best time
January to September
How long to stay
1 day

The Golden Temple of Dambulla has been a place of pilgrimage for twenty-two centuries. Five caves hold 153 Buddha statues and murals covering more than two thousand square metres of rock ceiling.

What makes it extraordinary is the continuity. This is not a ruin: monks still live here, and pilgrims still climb the rock barefoot every day.

It sits twenty minutes from Sigiriya, which makes the pair a natural single base.
