Nuwara Eliya

An English hill station that forgot to go home.

Region
Hill Country
Best time
February to April
How long to stay
1 to 2 days

The British built Nuwara Eliya to escape the heat, and it still looks the part: a racecourse, a golf club, a post office in red brick, and hedgerows that would not be out of place in Surrey.

What brings us here is the tea. The high-grown estates around the town produce some of the finest leaf in the world, and a morning walking the fields with a picker, then tasting through a plantation grades, reframes the drink entirely.

Bring a jumper. At this altitude the evenings genuinely bite.

What not to miss
