Galle Fort is a living town rather than a monument. People buy their vegetables inside the walls. The old Dutch warehouses have become bookshops and jewellers, and the street grid has barely moved since 1663.
Walk the ramparts at five in the afternoon, when the light goes long and the boys start jumping from the wall into the sea near Flag Rock. That hour is the reason Galle appears in almost every itinerary we write.
Beyond the fort, the town is a working port with a very good market and some of the best food on the south coast.
