Horton Plains

The island ends, suddenly, at World End.

Region
Hill Country
Best time
January to March
How long to stay
1 day

Horton Plains sits at 2,100 metres: cold, wind-scoured grassland broken by patches of stunted cloud forest, unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka.

The walk is a nine-kilometre loop taking in Baker Falls and both Mini and Greater World End, where the plateau simply stops and falls away 880 metres to the plain below.

You must start before six. By nine the cloud closes in and World End becomes a wall of white. This is not negotiable, and it is why we send you out with an early breakfast box.

What not to miss

  • The World End escarpment
  • Baker Falls
  • Endemic montane birdlife
  • Sambar deer on the grassland
