Negombo

Twenty minutes from the runway, and a world away.

Region
West Coast
Best time
November to April
How long to stay
1 night

Negombo is the sensible answer to a late arrival or an early departure: a twenty-minute drive from the airport rather than an hour into Colombo traffic.

It also happens to be a genuinely interesting town. The fish market at dawn is one of the great sights of the west coast, and the Dutch canal system still carries traffic.

A night here at the start of a trip lets you sleep off the flight and begin properly the next morning.

What not to miss

  • Lellama fish market at dawn
  • Dutch canal boat trips
  • Muthurajawela wetland
  • Twenty minutes from the airport
