Sinharaja
The last primary rainforest on the island.
- Region
- Rainforest
- Best time
- January to March, August to September
- How long to stay
- 1 to 2 days
Sinharaja is what Sri Lanka looked like before people: eleven thousand hectares of undisturbed lowland rainforest, with an endemism rate that field biologists travel a long way to see.
Birding here is done by ear and by mixed-species feeding flock, one of the most studied phenomena of its kind anywhere. A good guide will find you twenty endemics in a morning.
It rains. That is the deal. Bring leech socks, accept that you will be damp, and the forest will be extraordinary.
What not to miss
- Endemic bird flocks
- Purple-faced langur
- Rainforest night walks
- Guided botany trails
