Weligama

Stilt fishermen at dawn, beginner surf all day.

Region
South Coast
Best time
November to April
How long to stay
2 days

Weligama means sandy village, and the bay lives up to it: a long, shallow break with a soft bottom, which is precisely why every surf school on the south coast teaches here.

It is also the home of the stilt fishermen, a genuinely local tradition rather than a staged one, if you go at the right hour and to the right stretch of water. We will tell you which.

Taprobane Island sits just offshore, and Mirissa is fifteen minutes down the road.
