East Coast & Surf
Fifteen days via Trincomalee and Arugam Bay
The route most itineraries skip: Trincomalee and Pigeon Island, the surf at Arugam Bay, then over the hills and down the south coast to Galle.
A right-hand point break and not much else.
Arugam Bay is a long right-hander that peels for several hundred metres on a good swell, and the season, May to September, draws surfers from everywhere.
The town itself is a single sandy street of guesthouses and roti shops. There is nothing to do but surf, eat and sleep, which is exactly the promise.
Kumana National Park is next door for birdlife, and elephants regularly cross the road at dusk. Drive carefully.
